BALTIMORE-In its highest margin of loss this season, the Hampton University Lady Pirates fell to the Coppin State University Lady Eagles, 68-45 at the Coppin Center in Baltimore, Md.
All but two Eagles who stepped on the floor scored to lead Coppin State to its 10th straight victory. The Eagles are now 17-6 overall and 11-0 in the conference. The Lady Pirates fell to 11-11 overall and 7-6 in the MEAC.
Rashida Suber led four Eagles in double-digits with 15 points, while Tamieka Noel added 11 points and nine rebounds. Tanezia Harden and Sesalie Johnson chipped in with 10 points respectively.
Rachel Butler was the only Lady Pirate in double figures with 10 points, while Ashlee Finley led HU on the glass with five boards.
The game was close for the first eight minutes of play with the Eagles holding only a three-point advantage (11-8) following a Stephanie James jumper at 11:27. However Suber quickly answered with a three-pointer that sparked a 19-11 run by CSU. The blue and white scored four of the last five points of the half, but the Eagles still held the advantage, 30-21 at intermission.
Suber opened the second half with a three-pointer and the Eagles never looked by as they led as many as 27 en route to their 42nd consecutive conference victory.
The Lady Pirates shot a poor 27.3 percent (15-55) from the floor compared to the Lady Eagles’ 56 percent (29-52). This was also the first time this season that HU was outrebounded by a conference opponent as CSU hauled in 39 rebounds to Hampton’s 33.
Hampton scored 14 points in the paint to CSU’s 28 and the Eagles reserves outscored the Lady Pirate bench 22-16.
The Lady Pirates will return to action Feb. 17 versus Delaware State University at 4 p.m.
